Systemicandmetabolicabnormalitiesofteninvolvethebasalgangliaorthalamusonbothsides,andcarefulassessmentofbrainabnormalitiesoccurringsimultaneouslyoutsidethesestructuresisimportant.CTandMRimaging,includingT1-weightedimaging,diffusion-weightedimaging,MRangiography,MRvenography,andMRspectroscopy,areoftenhelpfulinnarrowingthedifferentialdiagnosis.Oftentimes,however,thediagnosisisnotstraightforward,andthecorrelationoftypicalimagingfeatureswithclinicalandlaboratorydatacanhelpmakethecorrectdiagnosis(Table).
